QualComm Million Dollar Challenge to Raise Funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF)
Dear Larry Finman,
Any support that you could extend to me to advance my efforts would greatly be appreciated. I will also be having a thank you & silent auction event in late August or September to recognize my supporters.
October 17 through 23, 2009, I will take part in the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge - an incredible 620 mile bicycle ride down the California coastline, from San Francisco to San Diego. The ride is held annually to raise funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) - a unique organization that enables people with physical challenges to participate and compete in the sports the rest of us take for granted.
As part of a dedicated group of 100 cyclists, I have committed to raise $10,000 for CAF toward our collective goal of $1 million. I hope you'll support me in this most worthy cause.
To meet the challenge of riding up to 119 miles per day I plan to undertake a 20-week training program that will prepare me to cycle across (and over!) some of the most demanding terrain in California. But my efforts pale in comparison to what is being accomplished on a daily basis by the remarkable challenged athletes supported by CAF. During the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge, I will ride alongside individuals who have returned from combat and learned to ride with a prosthetic leg... or who were left paralyzed after a life-changing accident and use a handcycle to cover the miles... or who are vision impaired and ride tandem with a pilot who serves as their "eyes."
What is not widely understood is that the very prosthetic limbs, specialized sports equipment and training that enables these athletes to compete in life-affirming sports often are not covered by insurance and can be inaccessible and cost-prohibitive to many challenged athletes. CAF often is the difference between these individuals making it to the starting line or being left on the sideline.
Finishing the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge won't be easy, but few truly rewarding things are. I know this will be a life-changing experience - for me, and for the remarkable athletes supported by CAF.
So, I hope Special Needs Vehicles will accept my challenge. Help me make dreams come true by making a tax deductible donation in my name to the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge.

Cool Press:
Last week I met with a reporter from the Arizona Daily Star that wanted to run a story on my participating in the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).
The story ran in Wednesday June 24, 2009 in the Sports section.
